What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a LIVING food and should be thought of as more than just a healthy beverage. It is a naturally fizzy, fermented tea full of probiotics and other healthy amino acids. Probiotics help re-populate the beneficial bacteria in the gut and bring your body back into balance. In addition, probiotics boost immunity, detox the body, help fight allergies, and improve mood.
Why Should You Use It in Your Real Food Lifestyle?
If you are living a real food lifestyle, you probably already know the importance of including fermented foods in your diet. Drinking kombucha gives you the same benefits of other ferments: improved digestion, balanced gut bacteria, and increased nutrient absorption.
According to kombucha expert, Hannah Crum of Kombucha Kamp, kombucha is also said to provide the following health benefits:
- Liver detoxification
- Increase metabolism
- Balance internal pH
- Rebuild connective tissue
- Cancer prevention
- Relieve headaches & migrains
- Increase energy and vitality
- Reduce blood pressure
- Reduce kidney stones
- High in antioxidants & polyphenols
- Improve eye sight
- Heal eczema
- Fight candida & other yeast infections
- Reduce gray hair
- Lower glucose levels
How does it work?
A SCOBY is added to a tea and sugar mixture. The SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria & yeast) feeds on the sugar and converts the tea into kombucha. The sugar is a necessary nutrient solution for the SCOBY and is converted into organic acids during fermentation– very little (if any) sugar is found in the resulting kombucha.
