Book Review and Giveaway: Make It Paleo

I think it was around this time last year that I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book.  You guys know Bill and Hayley, right?  If you’re not already familiar with these Real Food Rock Stars… you need to spend some time on their website.  Anyway, I had pre-ordered the book and was secretly jealous that I was not one of the A-List bloggers that received an advance copy to review.  Maybe someday… right?  Oh well, I was more than happy to pony up the cash for this fantastic cooking resource.

But guess what… I did make it onto the B-List A-List (part 2) of bloggers.  Yes,  I did… thank you very much.  And this is good news for you.  Wanna know why???  Since I already own a copy, I now have an extra copy to give away.

My Review:

1.  Whether you are new to a Real Food Lifestyle or a seasoned veteran, you want to own this book.  The book is less than 20 bucks on Amazon Less than 20 bucks??? That’s craziness.  The book contains a range of simple recipes that are perfect for those just transitioning into real food as well as more fancy-pants recipes for those who are beyond the basics.  And then there is the Treats & Cheats section… Let’s be honest, that’s the section that really matters.  As these treats are meant to be occassional and/or special indulgences, you will probably be filling your calendar with “special occassions” (even making them up or celebrating random things like Arbor Day) so that you have a reason to try out these amazing desserts.  Or maybe that’s just me.  Please… I know it’s not just me.

Their carrot cake recipe has long been a favorite of mine.  Hands down, it is the BEST carrot cake I have ever eaten.  Obviously, you have free access to this recipe on their blog, so just imagine the recipes that are only available in the book.  Just. imagine.

2.  The food photography is unbelievable.  Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.  Maybe some day I’ll get a real camera and be able to take halfway decent pictures.  (Don’t hold your breath… I’m broke.)  I actually feel a bit guilty that my copy is stored inside of a cabinet.  It’s not right.  It belongs on a coffee table… prominently displayed.  So please, if you win this book and you have a coffee table… you know what to do.  But I don’t have a coffee table.  I should get one… it’s the right thing to do.

3.  My kids love the book, too.  Granted, they tend to gravitate to the ice cream recipes.  (Oh, did I mention that there are a lot of ice cream recipes????  There are.)  Looking at gorgeous pictures makes real food even more exciting… at least in our house… I bet it will in your house, too.

My Recommendation:

1.  Enter the giveaway (keep reading) and try to win a copy.

2.  If you don’t win (you probably won’t… I only have one copy to give away… I know, I know… I never win either), then you should totally buy this book.  You get over 200 recipes.  200!  For those of you who may be mathematically challenged, that’s less than 10 cents per recipe.  Say whaaaat????  That ought to appeal to you bargain shoppers out there as well.

My Giveaway:

This is going to be easy.  Leave me a comment telling me how badly you want to win a copy of this book.  Make it interesting (if you care about winning, that is).  I will choose a winner on Friday, October 5.

I am definitely interested in learning more about the paleo lifestyle and how I could incorporate it into my vegetarian diet.

  • Becca

Thanks. I’m doing a lot of things that would be considered Paleo and could use the book for ideas.

  • Kristin W.

I want this cookbook so bad! I want it so bad, If I don’t win it it is going on my Chrismtas list:)

  • I would LOVE this cookbook. I’ve been diagnosed with Hypothyroid lately and have heard of all the great ways Paleo can help. This would be the greatest way for me to dive into the world of Paleo!
My husband’s full tummy after I cook him all these wonderful meals will be very thankful to you as well!!

Real food is so important. I have alleviated so many of my health concerns with nutrition and I am trying to impart all of this knowledge to all of my family that would also benefit, but they are slower to come around to changing their diets. This would help me persuade them through their taste buds that real food is really good (in so many ways).

  • I have borrowed this book from the library, so know just how amazing it is. Being First Nations, I am learning how important it is for me to eat a more primal diet, seeing as how it has only been 7 generations since all these crazy foods have been introduced here. I have eaten a high protein diet for years off and on, and definitely notice my energy and health increase when I eat a more paleo. Having a fantastic, handy dandy cookbook would be awesome to help when I am struggling for meal ideas:) Pick me pick me Please:D

So even though this contest is completely subjective and I barely know you… you should make me the winner of this amazing book b/c I also aspire to be an 80/20 Real Food Eater… and despite the fact that I didn’t bring you Amish Raspberries because the Amish worms ate them all before we could… I will now try to get this from the library and add it to my Christmas list for Santa to bring because you told me I needed it…

I desperately need to win this because all of my cookbooks are filled with fake food recipes!

  • Jen

I am a recovering vegetarian – starting eating meat just a couple of months ago. I dont know what the heck all these different body parts are or how to cook them. I desperately need recipes that taste good cause it still grosses me out! But I will persevere.

  • Make it Paleo sounds awesome! I’m always looking for grain free recipes- especially if they are real foodies. I can’t wait to check it out :)

  • First, thanks for the opportunity to win what sounds like an amazing book. You could have just saved it to give as a Christmas gift to someone on your list. I am a newer convert to Real Food, but my husband, who is the phenominal cook of the house, has yet to fully embrace the shift, as I slowly am swapping out and throwing out ingredients in HIS kitchen. He does, however, enjoy new and interesting cookbooks and recipes. This could just be the ticket! I am sure you’ll have lots of personal friends entering this giveaway. Thanks for considering me, even though we haven’t met.

This is a Toshiba laptop, desperately pleading for my life. My owner doesnt own a paleo cookbook yet. Instead, she drags me into the kitchen, after a recipe search on one of her favorite blogs (yours is on top of that list). Then, she strategically balances me on a pile of mixing bowls and ingredients, while I hold on for dear life and pray that this recipe is not my last. Then come the liquids, one by one splashing at me while i dodge them drop by drop. Please for my sake and for the sake of all my fellow laptops that get pulled kicking and screaming into the kitchen displaying recipes on our screens, while our owners try their cooking experiments on us…. please, pick my owner. She promises she’ll still use your website for recipes, too.

I would just love to win this book. I have been Paleo for quite sometime but I REALLY miss the treats and cheats so would love to have it for even that alone!!

  • Jen

I neeeeed this book so bad but I can’t go to the bookstore because I tend to leave with an armload of books and an empty pocket.

  • Spencer

I really need an easy to follow recipe book. Being a college student makes every little freebie and penny saved extra important. I track my budget closely. I could buy the book, but that would mean cutting down on the quality of my meals for a few days.Winning it from you would really help me out. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Barbara

I have heard so many fantastic things about this book but I’m broke at the moment too. I’m just transitioning into more real food lifestyle and I need help getting my family on board. I want to win this book because I know it would help convince the naysayers in my house to have these fabulous recipes. Please pick me. I really appreciate all the hard work you do to make your blog so helpful to all of us.

  • Susan R

oooo, really could use this to help me get into Paleo.

  • I’d love to win a copy because I’m tired of all of the recipes I’ve tried thus far and need to try new ones so I don’t fall off the wagon, lol!

How badly do I want this cookbook? Let me count the 200 ways! I would love this cookbook in the morning when I need to make breakfast. To the Eggplant Hole in the Head to the Beef Bacon and Eggs. Throughout the day I will turn to you oh cookbook as I crave to love your recipes more and more. From your Ahi tuna that I would sear to your Zucchini stuffed blossoms and all in between I would love you!!!

  • Heather

I have this book on my wish list already! I have been following the primal diet for almost three years now and would love a cookbook!

  • Tony

I would be so happy if I won, I could add this book to my giants collection of paleo books. I do really need to change some meals up in the kitchen!

  • Lisa

I don’t just badly want this book, I NEED it! I need a wonderful healthful way to get control of my weight and all of the associated issues I’m racking up because of it, such as the pre-diabetes, GERD, painful activity, heightened asthma just to name a few. You could help a once athletic mom get back on track to a healthy and active lifestyle!

The creativity in these posts is awesome! I wish I had thought of a list or Dorie’s quirky 200 ways. But I do have one key reason: My husband and I are beginning our Whole30 Paleo lifestyle challenge on Monday, Oct. 8. I already scour the web for recipes and resources and have been stocking our house and trying new recipes because I feel so much better eating this way. Paleo is relatively new to us, though, so I’m still learning.

Now, aside from the start of our Paleo journey, and I think even more important, our 10 year anniversary is Friday, Oct. 5! It would be amazingly perfect to win Make it Paleo in celebration and continuation of our life together. <3

  • Sheila M

Wow thanks for the opportunity to do something better for ourselves. I have been eating healthier for the past two years, but have just recently discovered Paleo. It is everything that I have been heading to for the past two years and your amazing book would rejuvinate my cooking. I have been using smoothies for a lot of my summer foods, but with winter coming on, crave the more hearty meals that winter brings. Would love to have your cookbook to help me on my journey and to inspire my granddaughter into eating better also. Again, thanks for sharing the opportunity for your book!

  • I would love to learn more about the paleo lifestyle. I’m trying to be a better cook, preparing better food for my family. My wife is celiac, so having a great understanding of nutritious and tasty means that avoid gluten would be so important to us.

  • Mariluz

I’m so eager to have this book. I’m learning how to eat and live in a Paleo diet. I’m from Spain and all my family and friends are tired of listening to me how beneficial for your health is this diet . I’m from Spain, and I would love to share new recipes with my loved ones here in the States and in Spain . Who knows! Maybe some day ill have my own book in Spanish!

About 2 summers ago, I decided to make a lifestyle change and embarked on my fitness/nutrition journey. Before, I was 185 lbs, but was rather active (played intramural sports, worked out regularly, etc.). However, I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I never even thought about what went into my body. Pizza, Cheetos, Little Debbie snacks… you name it, I ate it. I started off with P90X and watched my nutrition. After 3 months, I’d lost roughly 25 pounds. I continued my fitness venture with Insanity and Insanity Asylum, while constantly watching my nutrition. About 4 months later, I had lost another 20 pounds. While I was doing all this, I was also looking into Crossfit and, in turn, the paleo lifestyle (I don’t like to use the word diet, it’s misrepresentative). Fast forward to early this year, I started crossfit and made the jump to start eating paleo. I love every bit of it! Since starting crossfit, I’ve become so much stronger than I was during the BeachBody workouts. Cutting grains, dairy and legumes from my food intake has leaned me out, gotten rid of my eczema and given me more energy than ever before. I’m a healthy 130 lbs, and I’m proud to say I look and feel like a crossfitter. This is the lifestyle that I intend to maintain throughout my life and I advocate it to anyone who asks me about it. Honestly, if I won this giveaway, I’d probably give the book to a family member or friend. I think it’s something worth sharing to the world :)

  • I’m currently getting certified as a nutritionist and will approach my work using Te Paleo lifestyle. I can not get enough to read on this subject. There is a lot of great material, bit this book looks like it will be on top of my list

  • Kathy Clark

I know you’ve got tons of people that would love a copy of your extra book, but, I need help! I’ve started my healthy journy and am trying really hard to live a Paleo lifestyle. The problem is, I’m a celiac (for over 46 years) and I really am borred with the same old recipes. I’ve recently figured out that grains and dairy bother me along with gluten, so, HELP ~ PLEASE!!!! I’m 50 years old, tired, and trying my best to regain my health and keep it! I am a guardian/care giver of a 9 (almost 10) year old nephew that is special needs. He doesn’t talk and needs a lot of attention. I need to be strong and healthy to keep up with him. If that wasn’t enough, I’ve also become the guardian, care giver of his 6 year old sister that has attachment disorder and anxiety! PLEASE ~ I coudl sure use your help and would so love a little boost!

  • Ian

Ah man!!! I seriously would love to win this! As a side note, I’m a poor college student, so this would be ridiculously awesome!

  • I REALLY want to win this book. I have been trying to transition into a Paleo lifestyle for a couple of years, and it is so VERY difficult when my husband doesn’t want to join me. I would LOVE to have a cookbook that helps me create awesome food that my husband will eat and not even notice that it’s Paleo! Maybe THEN he will “see the light”!

  • After the Almond Milk Video I was sold. Hoping to try some of the recipes I’ve been hearing so much about from this book!

  • Everyone is talking about it – and I love carrot cake!

  • Tamra Rauzi

I’m a Newby & I need help & ideas. I know this is what I need in my life right now. I can feel the difference since I have givenup grains & dairy. I need some recipes to replace my old cravings with something new. PLEASE

  • Michelle

I already own it, but my mom and sister are just starting to sip the paleo kool-aid, and I would love to have them duke it out over this copy!

  • Karen W.

I have food allergies and leaky gut. I saw a book in the health food store about the Paleo diet and it sounds like what I need right now.
I would love to have this book. I eat mostly meat and veggies ( I
really miss fruit but hope to gain it back eventually).

  • Elisabeth

I’m halfway through a (mostly) paleo pregnancy and would love to win this book so I can find some new dinner ideas for our family!

  • Whitney

I have heard tons about how great this book is! I recently switched our whole family to paleo after my youngest was diagnosed with milk allergy and my middle son needs to be gluten free. Its been a tough adjustment for all of us and we are in desperate need of some variety in our life. We are going through some major gluten withdrawal right now!

  • Amber S

i’d love this book as a birthday gift. my husband and i have been paleo for about 3 months and are feeling great. i’ve lost 35 pounds so far with about 130 to go. but we stay with family a few times a year and would like to share tasty meals with them in a way that they won’t know that there are no grains.

  • I want this so bad. I’ve been eating paleo for more than a year and have entered so many contents like this, but never won one. I’m really tired of boring meals from my own brain or wasting time online looking for ideas. I need a hard copy. If I don’t get this book, I will spend approximately 8.776 hours sobbing under my bedsheets. Have pity!
